The Mothman is a cryptid from West Virginian folklore. The first alleged sighting occurred in 1966 in the town of Point Pleasant. There have since been a variety of sightings across the Midwest, with the creature becoming a prevalent myth and a beacon of tourism for the town of Point Pleasant. This project takes inspiration from both vintage tourism postcards and trail cam footage, representing Mothman existence as both a mysterious entity from dark local legends and a kitschy tourism mascot.
I created the costume first, using an old pair of pants and a hoodie as a base, extending the arms and legs to create a more nebulous, inhuman shape as well as the Mothman's famous giant wings. I covered the entire two piece costume with triangle's of black fabric to create a rough, feathered texture. The photos were taken at a local park, then edited in Adobe photoshop to create the vintage poster or trail cam effects.
