2021 | Welded steel
Flies are usually viewed as pests, often associated with disease and dirt. However, flies also traditionally symbolize persistence and determination. The fact that a creature with such a negative reputation is representative of something positive is very interesting to me, leading me to represent it in this sculpture. Metal, being a very sturdy material, lent itself well to this concept. The natural texture of the foraging and welding was not only left, but intentionally enhanced to give the fly a weathered look. It is meant to convey the idea that although the fly is beat up and damaged, it persists onwards.
