Summer in the Suburbs is a surrealist series inspired by my memories of growing up in the suburbs of Cincinnati. I created a list of words, places, and objects I associated with summertime childhood memories, then divided them into miniature word clouds with similar themes. Each word cloud then informed a sketch, upon which the final photo compositions are based. I constructed the photographs by combing stock photos and my own photography in Adobe Photoshop.
Realistically combining photos in photoshop was a new challenge for me. It required experimentation and practice to learn how to match lighting between photos, create clean but soft edges on objects, create realistic shadows and reflections, and other important effects.
